From March 1, 2023, taxpayers must keep a complete record of all the hours they work from home for the period to June 30, 2023, which could be in the form of timesheets, rosters or a diary.

Before that date, the requirements are less onerous. Those using the 67¢ flat rate method only need to keep diary entries covering a four-week period during the period from July 1, 2022 to 28 February 2023, or some other proof – such as work rosters, timesheets – covering a four-week period, showing they were working from home.

Loading

To claim the 67¢ fixed rate you will need a copy of at least one bill for each type of working-from-home expense such as electricity, internet, phone, stationery and computer consumables.

The new fixed rate is available if you do not have a dedicated home office. Chapman says that means if you work from the kitchen table or the lounge sofa, you can still claim the fixed rate.

Chapman says if you live with your parents or others and do not pay a market rent to live in the property, you cannot claim.

“The ATO gives as an example, someone who lives with their parents and pays a token amount of board – they can’t claim even if they have a dedicated home office because they don’t incur any additional costs to work from home,” he says.

“The parent might well incur additional costs – but as they aren’t the ones working from home, they can’t claim,” Chapman says.

A taxpayer is always free to use the “actual cost” method – calculating the actual expenses incurred as a result of working from home. Though the substantiation documentation is more onerous than the fixed rate method, for some it can result in larger claims.

Canada’s striking workers closer to resolving wage, remote work issues https://cbomo.com/canadas-striking-workers-closer-resolving-wage-remote-work-issues-2023-04-24/ https://cbomo.com/canadas-striking-workers-closer-resolving-wage-remote-work-issues-2023-04-24/#respond Mon, 24 Apr 2023 03:41:20 +0000 https://cbomo.com/canadas-striking-workers-closer-resolving-wage-remote-work-issues-2023-04-24/ [ad_1]

TORONTO, April 23 (Reuters) – A strike by about 155,000 Canadian federal government workers is closer to a resolution, with progress made on remote work and wage increases for Treasury Board employees, the union said on Sunday.

The strike is scheduled to continue for now amid ongoing talks about a deal for revenue agency workers, the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) said in a statement. The union has said it will “escalate” its actions on Monday.

A wide range of public services from tax returns to passport renewals have been hit since last Wednesday, when 120,000 Treasury Board workers and 35,000 revenue agency staff represented by the PSAC went on strike.

“At Treasury Board we made some headway on remote work language, and both sides have moved in order to get closer to a resolution on wage increases,” said Chris Aylward, National President of PSAC.

The talks with the government about wage increases for revenue agency workers, who oversee tax returns, have not made progress, he added.

The revenue agency workers wanted a pay hike of 22.5% over three years, while the Treasury Board workers who oversee federal government administration were seeking a 13.5% pay rise over three years. The government offered both groups a 9% increase over three years.

Canada’s annual inflation rate peaked at 8.1% last year but has since come down to about half of that.

In addition to higher wages, the union is also demanding flexibility to work from home.

A government spokesperson told Reuters on Sunday that it had received an offer from the union the previous evening and presented a counter-offer in response, without providing further details.

MAYFIELD, Ohio — If Mayor Brenda Bodnar’s state-of-the-village address given Monday (April 17) was a movie, Progressive Insurance would have played the lead role. That’s because Progressive, by far the village’s largest employee, and the owner of much of Mayfield’s property designated for business, has been doing things differently for more than three years in that its employees, following the pandemic, have not been mandated to return to work.

In her 25-minute address, Bodnar explained that while Progressive still employs thousands, those employees are not working daily in Mayfield and, thus, not paying to the village income taxes as they did prior to 2020.

Remote Workers Still Face Confusing Tax Rules https://cbomo.com/remote-workers-state-tax-rules-e9840c6e/ https://cbomo.com/remote-workers-state-tax-rules-e9840c6e/#respond Sat, 08 Apr 2023 21:00:41 +0000 https://cbomo.com/remote-workers-state-tax-rules-e9840c6e/ [ad_1]

It has been three years since workers started telecommuting in vast numbers, but state tax laws still haven’t adapted to the new remote-work paradigm and individual taxpayers are paying the price with exasperating state tax-filing procedures.

Many taxpayers who work remotely in a different state than their employer’s must prepare multiple state 2022 tax returns and account for precisely how many days they worked in the company office versus locales in other states—whether at home, at a vacation house, at the in-laws, or elsewhere.

Working from home tax changes: What you need to know https://cbomo.com/z51hsxbgx/ https://cbomo.com/z51hsxbgx/#respond Tue, 21 Feb 2023 08:39:54 +0000 https://cbomo.com/z51hsxbgx/ [ad_1]

Key Points:
  • Changes are being introduced to the fixed rate method of calculating working from home deductions.
  • The rate you can claim for each hour you work at home is increasing from 52 cents to 67 cents.
  • From 1 March, taxpayers will also have to keep more detailed records of the hours they work from home.
If you’ve spent the past few years working from home, you might think you’re across what expenses you can claim on your tax return. Think again.
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) has announced changes to working-from-home deductions for the 2022/23 financial year, with some taxpayers facing extra responsibilities from 1 March.

Here’s what you need to know.

What’s changing?

To claim working-from-home deductions, Australian taxpayers can choose one of two methods: the “actual cost” method or the “fixed rate” method.
The fixed rate method is the one that’s changing this year, with the amount you can claim for each hour you work from home increasing from 52 cents to 67 cents.

The type of working-from-home expenses the rate covers are also changing, as are the records you need to keep.

The requirement to have a home office set aside for work in order to be able to claim deductions is also being removed.

The ATO said the changes to the fixed rate method were being made to “better reflect contemporary working from home arrangements”.

What expenses does it cover?

The previous 52 cents fixed rate method covered the decline in the value of home office furniture, energy expenses for heating, cooling, and lighting, and the cost of cleaning your dedicated home office.

The revised fixed rate method includes deductions for:

  • Home and mobile internet or data
  • Home and mobile phone usage
  • Electricity and gas for heating, cooling, and lighting
  • Stationery and computer consumables, like printer paper and ink
If you use the fixed rate method to calculate your working-from-home expenses, you can’t claim a separate, additional deduction for any of the items it covers.
You’re still allowed to claim deductions for expenses that the method doesn’t cover, though. This includes things like computers, phones, and office furniture.

If an item costs $300 or less and you use it mainly for work, you can claim an immediate dedication for it during the financial year of purchase.

But if it costs more than $300, you can only claim a deduction for the decline in its value over its effective lifetime.
You can also claim any costs you incur for the repairs and maintenance of the items.
If you use the item for both professional and personal purposes, you can only claim the work-related portion as a deduction.

In special circumstances, taxpayers with a dedicated home office may also be able to claim occupancy expenses such as mortgage interest or rent, or cleaning expenses.

What records do I need to keep?

In previous financial years, taxpayers were required to keep records of either the actual number of hours they worked from home, or of a continuous four-week period that represented their usual pattern of working from home.
But from 1 March, the ATO will only accept a record of the actual hours you worked from home during the relevant financial year. Documents like rosters, timesheets, or a diary will suffice.

You also need to keep records of each expense you incur. This means if you use your phone when working from home, you’ll need to have a copy of your bill on hand. The same goes for electricity, gas, and internet, as well as any furniture or technology you use.

For those concerned about the changes around record-keeping coming in partway through the financial year, don’t fret – the ATO has put transitional arrangements in place.
“From 1 July 2022 to 28 February 2023, we’ll accept a record which represents the total number of hours worked from home (for example a four-week diary),” ATO assistant commissioner Tim Loh said.
Regardless of which method you choose to calculate your deductions, the ATO advises keeping records of all work-related expenses you incur throughout the financial year.
“This will give you more flexibility to choose the method that gives you the best deduction at tax time depending on your circumstances,” Mr Loh said.
Tax resources can be found on the in more than 30 languages.
