Babies born to mothers who engaged in exercise during the second and third trimesters of their pregnancy may have stronger hearts as a result, a study suggests.
In the study, published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise (MSSE) – the American College of Sport’s journal – pregnant women were divided into two groups during the last 24 weeks of their pregnancy; one group did 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise vs a comparison group that did no exercise but participated in 150 minutes a week of relaxation, mindfulness and body awareness practices. Those exercising were able to use the aerobic equipment of their choice, including treadmills, elliptical rowing machines and stationary bikes.
Researchers then carried out several heart-function tests on the subjects’ children one month after birth and found the babies whose mothers had exercised, showed “increased cardiac function.” Interestingly, the study, which included both women of a normal-weight and overweight women, found that the cardiac function effects were relatively greater in the children born to overweight or obese women. Led by academics from East Carolina University, the research was funded, in part, by the American Heart Association.
“Our initial finding suggests prenatal aerobic exercise decreases infant heart rate and increases cardiac function measures,” write the authors of the study. Their findings support the practice of obstetric providers continuing to promote 150 minutes per week of prenatal aerobic exercise, especially for overweight or obese women. The authors also noted that further research is needed to determine if the recommended levels of aerobic exercise during pregnancy provide cardiovascular benefits later in life, including decreasing the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Previous research also backs the idea that exercising during pregnancy can be beneficial to the heart health of children. A 2015 study published in the Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews journal highlighted the positive impact that exercise during pregnancy can have on a child’s risk of chronic disease. In fact, they concluded that their research mostly supported “the view that exercise during pregnancy is beneficial for both mother and offspring.”
It’s not just the exercise habits of mothers-to-be that can affect a baby’s health, though. A study published in 2020, suggested that a father’s health before conception could affect the outcome of a pregnancy for both the mother and child. In an analysis of 786,000 births, researchers found an association between a father’s poor health and increased odds of having a preterm or low birth weight baby that would require neonatal intensive care.
