Competing against influencers, streamers and alternative channels, tips for working with Brazilian players, the process of aligning with new operators and diving into local culture all became key touchpoints as day one of the SBC Summit Rio rolled-on.

As an Affiliate Leaders Panel took to the stage as part of the Rivalo sponsored Marketing and Affiliation track, the 40 minute conversation drew to a close with the five strong panel being quizzed on the best tips for working with players across the country.

Simon Hovmand-Stilling, CEO for South America for Better Collective, urged the industry to show the market respect when looking to capitalise on what is rightly, and widely, hailed as a huge opportunity. 

He added that “it’s definitely worth the investment of having feet on the ground”, which became a common theme throughout the session.

Taking a slightly different approach, Thomas Carvalhaes, Senior Business Development Manager for LatAm at GR8 Tech, warned the industry that Brazilians will take your word, and hold you accountable.

“Don’t lie to them. Don’t make any promises, promises you cannot keep. That’s it,” he commented. 

“Fastest payments, fastest withdrawals. If you say you’re going to be paying them withdrawals in less than an hour, and you don’t do that, they’re going to bombard you with complaints, public complaints, they’re going to bombard you with social networks, rightfully so, because we should not be stating what we cannot deliver.”

As Anastasiia Gepolova, Head of Marketing at Traffic Balance, reiterated a call regarding the critical nature of undertaking a sufficient amount of research, Vanda Silva, Chief Corporate Officer at Clever Advertising, issued a reminder regarding the need for a localised approach. A key topic that was delved into in the earlier stages of the discussion.

As the quartet of panellists were tasked with looking at what operators need to remember when beginning out in a region with particularly high traffic by moderator Gilda Caldas, Marketing Manager for Brazil at Afiliapub, Hovmand-Stilling reflected on a “steep learning curve” one year after moving from Better Collective’s Danish homeland.

Issuing a reminder that “it’s all about sports”, with football unsurprisingly highlighted, his key advice to operators centred around that of localisation.

You just need to dive into the culture and do your research on cultural differences so you know how to promote.”

“Remember, Brazil is definitely not just one market. Essentially, every state is very different. Their behaviour is very different. The interest of the people in every state is very different,” he noted.

As Silva echoed the comments of her fellow panellist, Gepolova first touched upon the attractive opportunity afforded to affiliates courtesy of the Brazilian region due to such a large volume of players. 

“You just need to dive into the culture and do your research on cultural differences so you know how to promote. But overall, I think Brazil is a great market,” she advised.

Picking up the baton, Carvalhaes gave his own input on what operators, affiliates and media and marketing companies must keep in mind when pondering the decision to enter the region.

“Do your homework, try your best to understand the local culture. What happens a lot of times that I’ve seen that is operators from overseas come into Brazil, launch their business, Google Translate, put a sombrero on Ronaldinho and say, hey, that’s Brazilian enough,” he said.

Adding: “Then they don’t make it. Then you know what? The market’s not good. Is the market not good or you haven’t done your homework? Have you hired local talent that understands the culture and people and makes it relevant to them?”

This saw talk quickly shift to that of acquisition driven by the aforementioned streaming and influencer communities, as Caldas asked about the role of these within the country versus more traditional means.

Silva confidently noted that traditional means still work, however, the importance of relevancy when aiming to appeal to players in each state was noted as critical. “We just have to make sure that we’re not speaking to 220 million,” she said.

Hovmand-Stilling continued: “In this region there is no way around it, you need to be doing streaming, you need to be working with influencers, you need to be in that whole social media sphere.

“That’s where it’s going on very much, the platforms are ever changing, the audience will move around, you have to adjust if you want to be relevant. That’s our approach.” 

As Caldas steered the conversation to the process of working with new operators, Gepolova put the spotlight on trust when it comes to affiliate marketing in the igaming industry, while Carvalhaes issued a further warning in jumping the gun when labelling the country as regulated.

“We’re in a fantastic process, everybody here. We’ve been waiting for this for very long … we used to dream of the day Brazil would be a regulated market,” he stated.

With Hovmand-Stilling pointing to issues such as compliance, ethics and ensuring a sustainable setup for everyone, Silva reflected on the past when elaborating on the need to adapt.

“It’s going to be another big period of adaptation for a regulated market, which is good for everyone,” she explained.

“It’s good for the brands, good for the affiliates, and even good for the players that will be able to trust the brands. We are going to need to adapt ourselves to the values of the market.

“But everybody sees potential. You have more than 140 brands going for the licences. So everybody sees potential here. And I believe there is space for everyone, and everybody is going to find their niche to work on.”

Country superstar Morgan Wallen might want to take off his “Whiskey Glasses” after reading what one fan is attempting to invoice him for after a last-minute show cancellation.

On Sunday, Wallen was set to perform in his second show at the University of Mississippi’s Vaught Hemingway Stadium in Oxford but canceled just minutes before he was supposed to go on stage following the opening acts who had already performed, citing a lost voice.

Naturally, fans were furious, with many penning lengthy social media posts and stories about how much money and time they had spent trying to make it out in time for the show.

One Facebook post by a woman started making its rounds after she called out the “Thought You Should Know” singer for just how much money she had spent road-tripping it to his show from Arkansas, despite Wallen’s team disclosing that all tickets would be refunded.

“Since you’re offering refunds, here is our itemized bill for you,” she wrote, tagging Wallen’s official Facebook page.

The invoice included a request for a $40 Cracker Barrel meal, a combined $338 for the couple’s outfits for the show, $560 for a hotel, $629 for a local clothing store, and other expenses (including four tickets to the show) which came out to a combined $3,982.

“My husband has gone with me to two concerts. Ever,” she wrote, asking for Wallen to send her the money directly via CashApp. “In the 17 years we’ve been together. Somehow I talked him into this one and this s–t happens.”

Her post made its rounds on Twitter where it was viewed over 3.6 million times. Many called out her extraneous request for being “ridiculous” and “out of touch.”

“Sucks, but it’s like any other live event,” one Twitter user pointed out. “Nobody made you spend SIX HUNDRED DOLLARS on collegiate merch and FOUR HUNDRED PLUS at the concert.”

“I mean, you either have that kind of disposable income, or you don’t allocate your funds that poorly,” another said. “Concerts and events get cancelled often. It’s a gamble knowing you’ll only get your actual ticket expense back.”

Wallen and his team have yet to address to the request.

The country star posted a formal apology to his Instagram story following the incident.

“After last night’s show, I started losing my voice so I spent the day resting up, talking to my doctor, and working through my vocal exercises trying to get better,” he penned to fans. “I really thought I’d be able to take the stage and it kills me to not deliver it before showtime, but my voice is shot and I’m unable to sing.”

He followed up with a second story, saying he is rescheduling a slew of shows over the next week while on vocal rest.

Wallen is currently on the road for his “One Night At A Time” World Tour.

Reading the news about the dramatic drop of homicides in Miami, a city of refugees, one must wonder about the sanity of the latest push by congressional Republicans to crack down on asylum seekers and their party’s overall anti-immigration stance.

A bill sponsored by Rep. Chip Roy, a Texas Republican, would have U.S. officials automatically ban or detain asylum seekers while their claims are being considered. While a few Republican legislators oppose it, the bill has dozens of Republican co-sponsors, many who echo former President Trump’s dubious claims that undocumented immigrants are driving up crime rates in America.

But Miami’s latest homicide figures show that this city, where nearly 55% of the people are foreign-born and many of them are undocumented immigrants, is experiencing steadily declining murder rates.

As the Miami Herald’s Charles Rabin reported on March 3, the first two months of this year recorded a historic low of only four homicides in Miami.

Over the past two years combined, there were only 97 homicides in Miami. That was the city’s lowest homicide rate in almost six decades, despite the fact that its population has grown over that period, and that it has recently received an influx of undocumented migrants from Cuba, Venezuela, Nicaragua and Haiti.

Anti-immigration zealots point out that Miami is an exception, because the city has benefited from the arrival of well-educated and often wealthy exiles from Venezuela, Nicaragua, Cuba and, more recently from Colombia, Brazil and Argentina.

But, contrary to the anti-immigrant propaganda of right-wing media that cherry-pick incidents of violence involving immigrants, homicides rates have been falling in the United States.

The murder rate fell by 7% in the 45 most populated U.S. cities last year. Miami showed a bigger decline than several other cities of similar size, such as Atlanta.

Interestingly, on the same day that the Miami Herald reported the decline in Miami’s murder rates, University of Miami professor Alejandro Portes and University of Pittsburgh professor Ariel C. Armony presented their book “Emerging Global Cities,” where Miami is placed alongside Singapore and Dubai as the world’s newest urban success stories.

“Despite their very different origins and history, Dubai, Miami and Singapore are remarkably similar,” the book’s authors say.

The three cities boast enormous ports, airports and banks that serve as centers for international trade and tourism, a thriving luxury real-estate industry and world-class art festivals such as our annual Art Basel. In addition, these cities are growing innovation centers, with big technological ambitions.

And the three “emerging global cities” all have benefited from capital flight from unstable or totalitarian countries in their regions. As I wrote in a 2021 column, Miami should build statues to Fidel Castro, Hugo Chavez, Nicolas Maduro and other Latin American dictators, who scared away investors and pushed their countries’ business people to deposit their savings abroad.

Immigration and ethnic diversity were key factors in the development of all three cities, the authors say. Portes and Armony’s book has a fascinating statistical table showing Miami’s ethnic composition since it sprung from a sleepy Southern town to the skyscraper-lined city it is today.

In 1970, the Miami-Dade County area was 27% Hispanic, 15% Black, and 66% white. Today, it is 69% Hispanic, 20% black, and 12% white, the book says, citing Miami-Dade County records.

“The emergence of Miami, Dubai and Singapore was absolutely tied to the immigration phenomenon,” Armony told me. “Without immigration, none of these cities would be what they are today.”

The three cities thrived thanks to both the arrival of wealthy economic exiles,and low-skilled construction and tourism industry workers that made their growth possible, Armony said. Rather than focusing exclusively on cracking down on immigrants, America needs a comprehensive immigration reform to regulate who can enter the country and how, he added.

Miami’s success story does not necessarily mean that immigration-majority U.S. cities do better than others. But it shows that it’s not true that migrants — both legal and undocumented — have a negative economic impact, or that they drive up homicide rates.

Miami is a living example that immigration often helps transform cities for the better.
