For businesses, success isn’t always measured strictly in terms of profits.
Businesses also can distinguish themselves by giving back to the communities in which their customers reside.
This principle was exhibited recently with a project that provided long-awaited improvements to Willoughby Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1500. The post, at 38295 Pelton Road, also serves as a meeting place for the Willoughby American Legion and the Combat Vets Motorcycle Association.
Forty Home Depot employees performed the project in one day, said Christopher Woodin, current commander of VFW Post 1500 and past secretary for Combat Vets.
“(The Home Depot) employees came from Cleveland Heights, Euclid, Chardon, Mayfield, Mentor, Medina — all over,” he said. “We were so thankful for them. For them to come and orchestrate all of this work in one day was unbelievable as far as getting everything in. It looks beautiful — night and day from before and after.”
The post also received a $16,000 grant from Home Depot.
Additionally, stone from DeMilta Sand and Gravel in Eastlake and a 40-yard garbage bin from Tony Scheiber’s Hauling out of Fairport Harbor were donated, as was coffee from Dunkin’ Donuts in Mentor. DBB Electric, a veteran-owned company, provided electrical services.
Others integral in the project included Willoughby Mayor Robert Fiala and Kari Pfeifer, VFW Ohio senior vice commander, as well as Woodin’s quartermaster and his canteen manager.
“We had heard The Home Depot periodically hands out grants,” Woodin said. “I actually stopped at the Mentor Home Depot and ran into the manager, Mike Pinguh. He was gracious in hearing our requests for the grants.
“He had told me to put a letter together and at that time, I stated if we can just get some landscaping done, that would be greatly appreciated.”
The VFW post consists of more than 100 members. There are close to 300 with the American Legion and roughly 50 in the Combat Vets organization.
Because of an aging population of members, it’s not an easy task for them to maintain the post like they used to, Woodin said.
“Anything would’ve been appreciated — $500, $1,500,” he said. “(Pinguh) ended up making many trips out to our post to see what we were dealing with.”
Woodin took over Post 1500 more than a year ago.
“It’s probably been 25 years since that post has been upgraded,” he said. “At that point, I’m like, our floor and hall is atrocious. It could be stripped and waxed. LED lighting in our kitchen — those regular lights get so hot on top of the ovens in here. Our ceiling tiles were still from back when the smoking days happened, so we were starting to save up to get those replaced.”
Furthermore, the carpeting was 25 years old with rips and tears in it, and there was also a desire to do an outdoor lounge area in the back area of the building for members. As a result, a material list of a 24-by-12-foot outbuilding off the back of the building was supplied.
“Jeff Wheeler Construction out of Mentor is going to construct that for us free of charge as a donation to our post, so that is greatly appreciated,” Woodin said.
As part of the upgrades, seven flagpoles were installed out front to honor all the branches of service.
“We have a sign out front and it’s illuminated,” Woodin said. “We had found out that there was just an extension cord going underground, so we thought we probably need to do some proper conduit there and they provided all the material for that, and ran the electric wire from our building to the sign.
“Later, we’ll get an electrician to tie that in for us.”
“This took a huge burden off of us and allows us to further help veterans in our community,” Woodin said. “It’s all such a trickle-down effect if you think about all that money we don’t have to spend.”

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – The city of Lansing is taking empty buildings and creating new opportunities in downtown Lansing and other areas of the city. The COVID-19 pandemic forced more people to work from home, leaving a lot of buildings unoccupied.
Background: Lack of foot traffic in downtown Lansing is impacting businesses
Now, developers are working with sponsors, city officials, and investors to fill vacant buildings and bring foot traffic back downtown.
“We need more housing, look at the homeless,” said Kenneth Pruitt who lives in Lansing and sees all of the vacant buildings downtown. It’s an issue that Lansing’s Mayor Andy Schor wants to turn into an opportunity.
“Lansing was rated the number one place to remote work. So we’re seeing a lot of people who want to live here. When you live here and you remote work, after work you want to get out of the house.” Schor said the city is working with developers like Jeff Deehan to bring more businesses, nightlife, and housing to the area.
“We sought to re-purpose some of these old buildings into something that would bring vibrancy to the city and we identified that there was actually something like 2,000 housing units that needed to be constructed,” said Deehan. He worked with his partners to turn the old Lake Trust Credit Union office building into City View apartments.
A move that Pruitt said helps a lot of families and young people. “From what I could see from the outside, they’re nice.” He said the city needs more housing. “It’s a building, I think, down there and a few right here – closed, all boarded up…for what?”
April Clobes at the MSU Federal Credit Union said they are working with developers, too, and providing financial help where it’s needed. “So you may see some apartments and some other, I would say, entertainment venue space down here that we’ve worked with from our commercial lending standpoint.”
On Wednesday, a new live music and performance venue broke ground in downtown Lansing. The Lansing Ovation Center will hold about 2,100 people bringing more foot traffic and business to the area.

During the pandemic, US employers embraced the new––and necessary––normal of working from home. But in the past year, the situation has begun changing rapidly. Major employers like Disney and Amazon have been moving employees back into the office for a few days a week––while over at Twitter, last November Elon Musk scrapped its work from home policy.
As for what the wider landscape looks like in the US, a recent study from Pew Research Center shows that while the number of solely remote workers is dropping, hybrid working is becoming increasingly attractive.
Three years on from the pandemic, the report finds that around 14 percent of all employed adults aged over 18 in the US––about 22 million people––are currently working from home all the time.
Of course, not every job has hybrid or remote potential, and the majority of US workers (61 percent) don’t have jobs with that option open to them. Before the pandemic in 2020, just 7 percent of US workers with remote-possible jobs were working at home all the time.
Today, just over a third of them (35 percent) are still working from home all the time. That percentage has been dropping––in January 2022, it stood at 43 percent, while in October 2020 it was 55 percent.
As Cydney H Dupree pointed out in this op-ed for The Hill, remote work can benefit specific groupings of employees in particular, such as Black employees. Meanwhile, it can also benefit the environment, as Dr John Williams noted late last year.
But there are reasons why people might want to return to the office: for example, in-person socialization and interaction, which can help with mentorship and career development.
Perhaps this is why we’re seeing the figures for hybrid working go in the opposite direction to remote work, as people find a balance between remote and office. Pew’s study found that of those with applicable jobs, 41 percent of people are working in a hybrid way. This figure has jumped from 35 percent in January 2022.
Regarding the benefits, 71 percent of people who work from home all, most or some of the time say it helps them balance their work and personal lives. Just over half (56 percent) of people in that situation say it helps them get their work done and meet their deadlines.
As companies begin to enforce return-to-office mandates, some employees are pushing back. Gleb Tsipursky writes in Entrepreneur that one effect is empowered labor unions, particularly in the wake of recent mass layoffs at major tech companies.
He details how YouTube Music contractors in Texas went on strike protesting a return-to-office announcement––most of them had always worked remotely as they were hired during the pandemic.
Meanwhile, after Disney’s return-to-office mandate was introduced, more than 2,300 employees signed a petition against the plan.
Data from Future Forum shows that workers who have flexibility regarding location report 4 percent higher productivity scores than workers in the office full-time.
Schedule flexibility can lead to even more benefits––workers with fully flexible schedules report 29 percent higher productivity than workers who have no flexibility, and they also say that they have 53 percent greater ability to focus.

Rapper Post Malone is taking his talents (and an unmistakable sense of style and body art) outside of the music world into his newest foray — fast food.
The artist, whose real name is Austin Richard Post, has teamed up with chicken chain Raising Cane’s to open a one-of-a-kind restaurant near his home in Midvale, Utah — complete with a pink exterior and tattoo-inspired art etched across the building.
The restaurant is donned with mementos from Post’s touring days and career, including a 1974 Ford F250 in the parking lot featured in one of the rapper’s music videos, which will become a permanent fixture of the restaurant.

“It’s a really cool restaurant,” Post told reporters at the ribbon-cutting ceremony last week. “We got like crazy stuff. We put some armor in there, some old stinky outfits that I wore on tour and for events, and they still have the musk on them, and they’re still 100% collectors.”
The “White Iverson” singer even features ping pong games to represent his love for the game.

Custom merchandise is for sale, of course. Menu items include the “Posty Way Combo meal” — four chicken fingers, crinkle-cut fries with two orders of the famous Cane’s sauce, two pieces of Texas toast, extra salt and pepper, and an unsweetened iced tea lemonade.
The restaurant was gutted and redesigned after the musician took over, from the bathrooms to the outdoor landscaping.
“It’s really fun to see it come to fruition,” Raising Cane’s CEO Todd Graves said, per local outlet Fox 11. “The idea was to be next level, over the top, to do something that’s never been done before.”

The rapper lives about 20 minutes away in Salt Lake City in a five-bedroom, seven-bathroom home on seven acres. He purchased the house in 2018.
Raising Cane’s currently operates over 600 locations in the U.S., with more than 165 locations in Texas alone.

A Dallas-based recruiting firm that was seeking employees for Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway shuttered its website this week after screenshots of a job posting surfaced on social media that allegedly asked for “white” candidates.
The listing first made its rounds on Twitter by a user named Kendall Brown, where its since been viewed over 9.6 million times.
The position, which was allegedly posted to LinkedIn by Arthur Grand Technologies, was looking for a contract Business Analyst at a $75 per hour rate based in Dallas, Texas.
The Tweet shows a red circled portion of the listing that reads “Only born US citizens [White] who are local within 60 miles of Dallas, TX [Don’t share with candidates.]”

Thousands of shocked Twitter users responded with dismay, with some questioning whether the post was “satire” or “photoshopped.”
“They need to be reported,” someone said bluntly.
“Whenever I see posts like this I can’t help but wonder how often it happens WITHOUT someone having the courage to leak it,” another said.
Those who thought that the listing was photoshopped were proven wrong, though, after Arthur Grand issued a statement on its LinkedIn page.
“This job posting was neither authorized nor posted by Arthur Grand or its employees,” the company wrote. “A former employee took an existing posting and added discriminatory language, then reposted it through his own account. The moment this was brought to our attention, we worked with the job portal to remove this offensive job posting.”
Arthur Grand Technologies said that it has taken legal action against the individual who changed the posting while noting that it is a minority-owned company and insisted that “employment decisions are based on the individual’s qualifications.”
However, a screenshot posted by Twitter user @buccocapital shows what appears to be the company’s original response to the incident on Linkedin — the company blamed a “new junior recruiter” for the posting and maintained that they “terminated their employment.”

The posting has since been deleted. Arthur Grand has also shut off its comments on its most up-to-date LinkedIn post.
The IT staffing firm’s website was back up and running Thursday afternoon, but the company disabled its “Contact Us” section as well as the ability to contact the company via LinkedIn.
Entrepreneur has reached out to Arthur Grand and Berkshire Hathaway for comment.
