It’s no secret that social media has become a major part of the artist and song promotion playbook.

Short-video apps like TikTok and Instagram have become the center of many of those efforts, given that hundreds of millions of people now discover new music by scrolling through feeds.

TikTok, in particular, has revolutionized how users discover not just new songs and artists but old ones too. Decades-old tracks like Matthew Wilder’s “Break My Stride” have experienced a resurgence after trending on social media.

“One of the interesting things that has emerged out of this TikTok ecosystem is that catalog is never really dead,” Sean Kane, a cofounder at the music marketing firm Hundred Days Digital, told Business Insider. “A record is new as long as there’s momentum around it.”

While some songs rise on social media organically, many are pushed into the mainstream by music-marketing agencies that work with artists, managers, and record labels to help tracks take off. As short-video platforms have become more saturated with videos from non-music creators, brands, and other commercial content, these marketers have had to get creative to help new songs breakthrough.

Gone are the days when labels or artists hire a few top influencers to popularize a song. Marketers now work with producers to remix tracks, create custom augmented-reality filters, work with micro influencers in a specific music community, or find other creative ways to help fans discover artists and songs amid a sea of content.

“We’re not just going to hire five influencers to do a dance on platform and hope that sticks,” Ramzi Najdawi, cofounder at the music-marketing firm ATG, told BI.

These marketers are scrappy and quick to adapt to changes in the industry. When Universal Music Group pulled its songs from TikTok amid a contract dispute, marketers quickly pivoted to campaigns on Instagram reels. Some even found ways to capitalize on the moment by swapping in new songs on videos that previously featured UMG tracks.

To highlight how music marketing on social has evolved, BI compiled a list of 13 agencies and upstarts doing innovative work in the space and some of their key leaders. We turned to sources at record labels and other music-industry professionals, as well as nominations from our readers, to find companies doing creative campaigns in music marketing.

Here are those companies, listed in alphabetical order below:

V&A Museum Seeks Swifties for Taylor Swift Advisory Role https://cbomo.com/va-museum-seeks-swifties-for-taylor-swift-advisory-role/ https://cbomo.com/va-museum-seeks-swifties-for-taylor-swift-advisory-role/#respond Fri, 23 Feb 2024 20:05:09 +0000 https://cbomo.com/va-museum-seeks-swifties-for-taylor-swift-advisory-role/ [ad_1]

Singer-songwriter superstar Taylor Swift remains a global sensation as she continues her record-breaking Eras Tour — and major cultural institutions want to do her justice.

That’s why London’s Victoria and Albert Museum is calling all UK-based “Swifties” to apply for a new advisory role that would provide “insights into the culture and artisanry around handmade signs, friendship bracelets and Taylor Swift memorabilia,” Reuters reported.

The new hire will work with the museum’s curatorial team to contribute their expertise as “part of a drive to complement further the vast curatorial knowledge within the museum’s walls.”

The museum is also seeking experts in other “highly specific cultural niches” for part-time roles, including aficionados of emojis and Crocs shoes.

The V&A is one of the world’s largest art and design museums; founded by Prince Albert in the 1950s, it holds over 2 million objects made in the last 5,000 years, according to Condé Nast Traveler.

Of course, this isn’t the first Taylor Swift-related job to hit the market. In September, The Tennessean and USA Today network made headlines during a search for a “Taylor Swift Reporter” (veteran reporter Bryan West was hired a couple of months later).

Fans have also been cashing in on a Taylor Swift-inspired side hustle that can pay tens of thousands of dollars per month: selling the friendship bracelets so often exchanged at Eras Tour concerts on Etsy.

Applicants can apply through the V&A’s website here.

YouTube launches Gen Z Music ad option https://cbomo.com/youtube-launches-gen-z-music-ad-option/ https://cbomo.com/youtube-launches-gen-z-music-ad-option/#respond Sun, 30 Apr 2023 07:07:52 +0000 https://cbomo.com/youtube-launches-gen-z-music-ad-option/ [ad_1]

YouTube has rolled out new advertising options for brands and businesses, in what appears to be an attempt to rival the success of TikTok.

The first of these options has been named ‘Gen Z Music’, which gives an indication as to the demographic these ads are designed to target.

The option will allow businesses to run advertisements on trending music videos. For example, if a song is trending on TikTok or on Instagram, this drives traffic towards YouTube to search for the song. Businesses will now be able to tap into this opportunity and run ads alongside these trending songs.

Going into more detail about, YouTube said: “It’s a no-brainer that songs by the likes of Bad Bunny, Doechii and Rosalía are popular with Gen Z, but most brands don’t realize that classic hits by Cyndi Lauper and underground music from the latest soon-to-be superstars are popular with Gen Z on YouTube, too.

“To align your brand with the music most popular with Gen Z at the moment, we’re launching the Gen Z Music package, which leverages AI-powered signals across YouTube to identify songs trending with Gen Z, so you can reach them with the music they know and love.”

The option is also being extended to YouTube Shorts, with ‘Trending Music on Shorts’ allowing businesses to run ads on Shorts that use trending audio clips.

These new features will certainly offer more opportunities for businesses on YouTube, and with over 100 million songs in the YouTube catalog, brands won’t be short of options.

Gen Z has long been a top target for digital brands and businesses, and appealing to this demographic is key to success in today’s market. With YouTube’s new ad options, brands will now be able to target this demographic more effectively by tapping into the group’s passion for music and love of short-form video content.

an album artwork expert on Pink Floyd’s music marketing revolution https://cbomo.com/an-album-artwork-expert-on-pink-floyds-music-marketing-revolution/ https://cbomo.com/an-album-artwork-expert-on-pink-floyds-music-marketing-revolution/#respond Wed, 01 Mar 2023 18:18:37 +0000 https://cbomo.com/an-album-artwork-expert-on-pink-floyds-music-marketing-revolution/ [ad_1]

This month marks 50 years since the release of The Dark Side of the Moon. Pink Floyd’s eighth studio album beamed the band into super stardom with platinum-selling singles such as Money and The Great Gig in the Sky.

Typifying Pink Floyd’s mix of philosophical lyricism and spaced-out rock sound, the record sits comfortably in the top 50 best-selling albums of all time. It is also frequently called one of the greatest albums of all time by popular music magazines such as Rolling Stone and NME.

The iconic album cover, produced by Storm Thorgerson’s legendary design agency Hipgnosis, is a seminal reference point in pop culture and modern art. Unsurprisingly, it makes for a popular band t-shirt design and figures consistently and prominently on “best album cover” lists.

The image of the enigmatic prism reflecting beams of light into deep space parallels the band’s complex sound world and their lyrical interplay between science and mysticism.

There are several interpretations of the cover art’s meaning. Some fans have suggested that it works as a metaphor for personal and psychological darkness, while others maintain that the prism in particular represents intellectual thought and ambition.

But this wasn’t the first time the image of the rainbow and prism had inspired album artwork. A similar cover was created by New York-born Alex Steinweiss 30 years before The Dark Side of the Moon. The graphic designer is generally recognised as the “inventor” of album cover art as we know it.

Steinweiss’ revolutionary design

As the in-house designer for Columbia Masterworks, Steinweiss produced over 2,000 bespoke artworks. It was later reported that his album covers helped boost sales and increase the label’s profits. One such artwork accompanied Rudolf Serkin, Bruno Walter and the New York Philharmonic’s 1941 recording of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5.

This cover is noteworthy in that it subverted the tradition of insipid grey and tan Kraft paper sleeves that offered only the essentials, such as the record company name and details of the stores in which the recordings were sold.

Indeed, the uninspiring packaging for these 78rpm shellac discs was among the reasons the pseudonym “tombstones” came about – the way these recordings were referred to in the trade.

Steinweiss’ Beethoven artwork was part of a marketing revolution that in part defined mid 20th-century graphic design.

The sleeve’s central motif is a white piano, set against a midnight black backdrop, into which a white beam of light shoots. Emerging from the other side of the piano are six multicoloured beams that span the length of the sleeve. This combination of images could be interpreted as a metaphor for the artist’s composition and performance process. Inspiration strikes the composer and out of the piano arrives a magnificent and colourful array of sounds.

A brown plain vinyl record sleeve.

An example of the ‘tombstone’ design Steinweiss’ covers replaced.
Art Album Exchange

At first glance, the resemblance between this and The Dark Side of the Moon’s artwork is remarkable. In fact, the only substantial differences are the object through which the light is reflected and the printed text. Nevertheless, there is no evidence to suggest that Hipgnosis drew inspiration from, or even knew about, Steinweiss’ cover art.

Rather, it is documented that Aubrey Powell (Storm Thorgerson’s collaborator and co-founder of Hipgnosis) happened upon a photograph in a French physics textbook, which used a glass paperweight to demonstrate the principles of refraction.

The image of a prism reflecting a rainbow of light worked with Pink Floyd’s request for a bold and dramatic design. In addition, Thorgerson claims that the artwork served as an homage to the impressive light show that had become an integral part of Pink Floyd’s live performances.

So the hidden resemblance between these two legendary cover artworks isn’t a case of copy and paste. It speaks to a broader phenomenon – the bespoke sleeve design revolution that turned music marketing strategies on its head.
