Popularity of working from home falls in Spain https://cbomo.com/popularity-of-working-from-home-falls-in-spain/ https://cbomo.com/popularity-of-working-from-home-falls-in-spain/#respond Thu, 16 Mar 2023 13:59:31 +0000 https://cbomo.com/popularity-of-working-from-home-falls-in-spain/ [ad_1]

A recent study by Spain’s Observatorio Nacional de Tecnología y Sociedad (ONTSI), has revealed that working from home (teletrabajo) is falling in popularity in Spain, and that the country as a whole lags behind other European countries.

The report, which you can read here, concludes that teletrabajo steadily reduced in 2022, albeit with a slight rebound in the last quarter. Taking into account 2021 and 2022, it has fallen from 13.6 percent of the workforce (around 2,742,000 people) to 12.5 percent (2,563,000 people) and has done so for both men and women.

Currently, 12.6 percent of women (1,191,000 workers) work remotely compared to 12.5 percent of men (1,372,000 workers).

In terms of regular remote working, something the study considers to be half of your total working days, the number has fallen from 7.9 percent to 6.4 percent. However occasional remote working, in other words, less than half of your working days, has increased from 5.7 percent to 6.1 percent.

Age

The study also highlighted some interesting demographic differences in the data, and the types of people who are more or less likely to work from home.

Teletrabajo is more widespread in people over 25 years of age in particular, with workers between 35 and 54 years of age being the ones who work remotely the most (13.5 percent).

Around 12 percent of workers over 55 work from home, and 11.9 percent between 25 and 34 years old. Just 6.1 percent of people between the ages of 16 and 24 work remotely.

Region

There’re also some interesting regional discrepancies in the data. Madrid tops the list of remote workers, with 19.1 percent of people working from home on an occasional or regular basis. Next is Catalonia with 14.1 percent, and Valencia with 11.9 percent.

On the other hand, the regions and cities where remote working is least common are Ceuta (5.6 percent), Extremadura (6.8 percent), Melilla (6.9 percent) and Castilla-La Mancha (8.5 percent).

Overall across Spain, the percentage of people working from home has decreased in 12 of the 19 regions and autonomous cities.

Self-employed

In what is probably unsurprising news, the self-employed are far more likely to work from home than other people in Spain. Autónomos, as they are known in Spain, almost triple the number of salaried workers who work remotely. 26.4 percent of people who are self-employed work from home, while for salaried employees the figure is just 10 percent.

Teletrabajo among salaried employees has plummeted in Spain after reaching 17 percent in the second quarter of 2020 as the pandemic raged and companies tried to find alternative working arrangements.

EU comparison

Interestingly, Spain lags far behind other countries when it comes to working from home. According to the latest data published by Eurostat, in 2021 the European average was 24 percent (of workers working remotely), significantly higher than in Spain and higher even than Madrid, the region where teletrabajo is most popular.

The Netherlands has the highest proportion of remote workers in Europe with 53.8 percent, followed by Sweden (46.2 percent) and Luxembourg (45.1 percent).

Is Alia Bhatt Guilty of Leaving Daughter Raha At Home For Work? Alia Bhatt became mother to a baby girl in November last year. (Photos: Instagram)

Recently, Alia Bhatt also took Raha to Kashmir with her for the shoot of Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani.

Alia Bhatt is enjoying a new phase in her life, that of motherhood. At the same time, she has also returned to work months after welcoming her daughter Raha. Therefore, in a recent interview, the Brahmastra actress was asked about the ‘guilt’ she feels as a mother while leaving Raha at home for work.

Alia mentioned that she cannot ‘sit and complain’ because she chose to be an actress, producer or mother. She explained that life is tough for everyone and might not always be a ‘smooth path’.

“Yes, I have a lot of clutter in my mind and I like being on top of things. But as far as the mother thing goes, it is a new experience, and anything new can be challenging. But when I have low energy, just one look at my baby and I have 1000-watt energy. I chose to be an actor, a producer, an entrepreneur and a mother. So I can’t sit and complain and be like ‘life is very hard’. But life is tough for everyone, life is not always going to be a smooth path. You just have to keep moving, but a good night’s sleep is always the way to recuperate for me,” she told Humans of Bombay.

Alia also mentioned that feeling guilty is a ‘very regular feeling’ and added, “You just need to tell yourself that you are doing your best. And of course, I think all the big corporations/companies should give mothers their maternity leave. It’s something that I would like to loudly say.”

Earlier today, Ranbir Kapoor also shared how Alia is an ‘overstressed’ parent but called himself a ‘chill dad’. “She is very stressful. So I will have to be that little bit of a calming factor. And I feel sometimes you’re a little overprotective about children ki ‘don’t do this or that, don’t meet people’. But I feel the more you are easy with it, a human being adapts, and a human being’s immunity also gets better as they grow older. So I don’t think we should be overprotective,” he told Kareena on What Women Want.

Meanwhile, Alia Bhatt will be next seen in Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani, the shooting for which is already completed. The film will hit theatres in July this year. Besides this, Alia also has Jee Le Zara with Priyanka Chopra and Katrina Kaif in her pipeline.

If you already have Vivint Smart Home securing your home or are considering getting Vivint to act as your smart home security company and want to know if your existing smart devices are compatible, this article will help solve your quest. We utilized our product find engine, The GearBrain, to see which smart devices are compatible with Vivint’s smart home security platform. Our platform is the only one of its kind and can quickly help you find, buy and connect any smart device, especially those compatible with your existing smart products in your home.

This article will reveal all the connected products that work with Vivint. This includes all smart locks, video doorbells, security cameras, thermostats, smart lights, garage door openers, smart speakers, and displays.

Smart Security Cameras That Work with Vivint

a photo of Vivint Spotlight Pro installed Vivint Spotlight Pro is an outdoor spotlight and floodlight security cameraGearBrain

Vivint has security cameras you need to work with the Vivint Smart Home system. The company offers indoor and outdoor security cameras. Like most smart home security systems, the cameras that are compatible with the system are made especially for the manufacturer. GearBrain has tested all these security cameras, including the new Vivint Spotlight Pro. This new smart outdoor security camera combines Vivint Outdoor Security Pro (Gen 2) and a floodlight. It has many new smart features, including having the floodlight cam detect a person lingering outside your home and follow them with lights as they leave your property. It’s like how a spotlight is used in stage shows to track the actor. And if you want, you can shout them out using the camera’s speaker. You can learn more about Vivint Spotlight Pro by reading our review.

In addition to the new outdoor floodlight cam, Vivint has an indoor 1080p HD security camera with motion detection, two-way talk, a 155-degree field of view (horizontal), and infrared night vision. And there is the Vivint Outdoor Security Pro (Gen 2) camera. This camera is the same camera Vivint uses for Vivint Spotlight Pro. It has 4K Ultra HD video resolution with HDR, two-way talk, IP65 weatherproof rated, 140-degree FOV, and the company’s new Smart Deters technology. This new motion detection is built into the camera and helps deter unwanted visitors from approaching your house. It can even detect the person’s location and sound a siren that can get as loud as 85 dB. This is loud enough to grab the attention of intruders up to 55 feet away.

If you want to get Vivint security cameras for your Vivint system, you have to buy them from Vivint. They are not available from any retailers, and you do need to have a Vivint system too.

Smart Video Doorbells That Work with Vivint Smart Home

Like security cameras, there is only one smart video doorbell compatible with Vivint Smart Home, which Vivint makes. We recently tested their new Vivint Doorbell Camera Pro (Gen 2), which has many smart features, including 1664 x 1664p video resolution with 2x HDR and high-powered IR LEDs (850nm), which can help you see images up to 25 feet away. Vivint’s new doorbell also has a microphone with ambient noise cancellation and a speaker that can go as loud as 90 dB.

Vivint Doorbell Camera Pro comes with the company’s new deter technology and a 180-degree field of view (FOV) horizontally and vertically. This wide FOV will allow you to see side-to-side and head-to-toe views on the Vivint app or Smart Home hub. Also, this new doorbell needs to be wired for power. It requires 12-24 DC or 16-24 AC power but will work with your existing video doorbell wires if it has sufficient capacity. The doorbell also connects to your home Wi-Fi network using 2.4/5GHz (802.11 b/g/n/ac) and Bluetooth and NFC connections.

Though we would like to have the option to add other smart video doorbells to the Vivint Smart Home system, what Vivint offers is quite good and will protect the area outside the doors of your smart home.

See our review of Vivint Doorbell Camera Pro (Gen 2) here.

Vivint installed Nest Pro Thermostat on a wall.Vivint systems integrate with other smart home devices like Nest Thermostats, Yale Assure SL Z-Wave smart lockes and others.GearBrain

If you want to add a smart thermostat to your Vivint System, you can choose two smart thermostats: Google Nest Smart Thermostat or Vivint’s. Either of these smart thermostats is compatible with Vivint’s smart security system.

The Vivint Smart Thermostat works with standard heating & cooling systems, including conventional forced air, radiant, and heat pump systems. It has three stages of heating and up to 2 stages of cooling and supports many types of fuels, including natural gas, propane, electric, fuel oil, and geothermal.

The Google Nest Smart Thermostat is also compatible with Vivint Smart Home. Whether the new Google Nest Pro Learning Thermostat (3rd Gen), Google Nest Learning Wi-Fi Thermostat (3rd Gen), or Google – Nest Thermostat – Programmable Smart Wi-Fi Thermostat from 2020, all will work with Vivint.

One essential item we need to mention about smart thermostats is the C-Wire. For those of you who don’t know what a C-Wire or “common wire” is the wire that enables the continuous flow of 24 VAC power to your smart thermostat. Many smart thermostats today require you to have a C-Wire. (Learn more about C-Wire here.) To check if you have a C-Wire, remove the cover of your existing thermostat and see how many wires are connected. If you have only two wires connected, it’s safe to say you don’t have a C-Wire. But don’t worry, the smart thermostats by Vivint and Nest come in either a battery-powered (4AA) version or 24VAC wired power from the HVAC system. So you don’t necessarily need a C-Wire.

If you want to add a smart thermostat to your Vivint System, you can get them directly through Vivint by clicking here. If you currently own a Nest smart thermostat and want to add it to your Vivint system, contact Vivint, and they will help you connect. And if you want to buy your Nest Thermostat, they are available on Amazon, Best Buy, Walmart, and other major retailers.

Vivint Smart Home works with both Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant voice platforms. You can control your Vivint system with voice commands if you have a smart speaker or display from either of these two systems. The commands can range from asking Alexa to arm your Vivint system to asking Google Assistant to turn your lights on or asking if your door locks connected to Vivint are locked. Either of these smart voice systems can act as a voice controller for your smart devices, including the ones connected to Vivint. And if you have a smart display, you can ask Alexa or Google to “show my Vivint doorbell” or “show my Vivint Spotlight Pro,” and a live feed from your Vivint camera or doorbell will appear on your smart display’s screen.

In addition to smart speakers made by Amazon and Google, other smart speakers have one of these, if not both, voice platforms built-in that are compatible. For instance, Sonos’s new Era 100 and Era 300 smart speakers have Amazon Alexa built-in. This means it can function just like an Amazon Echo or Echo Dot. So you can use voice controls on these devices to control your Viviint system. Just make sure the Alexa app is connected to the manufacturer’s app or, in this case, the Sonos app to communicate with your Vivint system. Click here to see if your smart speaker with Alexa or Google Assistant is compatible with Vivint. If not, you can sign up on our platform and let us know what smart speaker you have in your home. We will let you know if it’s compatible or not.

Vivint doesn’t sell these smart speakers and displays. You can pick them up at Best Buy, Amazon, or other major consumer electronics retailers. They range from $40 to over $250 per smart device.

But no smart sprinkler controller or smart water monitoring system like Phyn Plus works with Vivint. We hope to see these in the near future.

Here’s everything you need to know about CBS Essentials, from our writers to our business model.

EDWIN TAN / Getty Images

It’s simple: CBS Essentials is your trusted guide to online shopping. Our mission is to help you find solid, reliable products for your home, health and family, and to plug you into the latest deals and news about brands you love — all from a name you can rely on.

Our writers and editors live and breathe online shopping, with years of collective experience covering the retail landscape and reviewing products. We compile expert advice, customer reviews and first-hand know-how to find just the right products to recommend. We’re plugged into all the top retailers to make sure we know when deals drop, new products launch and sales begin. And we provide hands-on reviews in the categories where buyers want the most help with their decision-making — consumer tech, mattresses, robot vacuums, clothing and more.

And this is important: Our editors work independently of the CBS News newsroom; we work independently of retailers; and we make money when you buy things from our links. We will always be clear with our readers about this.

How we select products

Our team of experts look at each product across five key metrics to deliver recommendations that are thorough, objective and useful.

  1. Verified reviews: We only consider products that are widely reviewed with consistently high ratings from verified buyers and qualified experts. If a product doesn’t meet that high standard, it doesn’t make our buying guides.
  2. Brand trust: There’s a reason why Americans trust some brands more than others, and we give special attention to those with a proven track record, consistent sales and a solid reputation for quality and satisfaction. We’re always looking for innovative new companies and products your household might like, but we weigh our selection metrics in favor of the tried-and-true.
  3. Customer feedback:  We keep a steady eye on what our readers buy, what they keep, what they return, what they buy again.  We listen to what our readers and similar consumers have to say, and feed that data into the buying guides and deals we bring to you.
  4. Newsworthiness: We keep a constant eye on new product drops and brands, and we vet them with the same painstaking standards we apply to every review and roundup. Whether it’s a fresh product that’s gone viral, or a new brand that’s disrupting a whole business model, we make sure it meets our quality benchmarks before recommending.
  5. Features and history: Whether it’s a brand-new washer-dryer set or the latest smartphone, features and capabilities matter. We evaluate each product’s feature offerings against its previous versions and competitors. Our experts — in tech, furniture, appliances, kitchen, travel, fitness and deals — know what features matter, so you can, too.

Our goal at CBS Essentials is to do the rigorous research so you don’t have to, and recommend only the best products for your busy life.

How the CBS Essentials team works

The Essentials team sticks to rigorous content guidelines: All product selections and editorial decisions are our own. We have affiliate relationships with many retailers, which is how CBS Essentials makes money. When you click a link to shop for a product, we receive a portion of the revenue from any resulting sales. This affiliate relationship does not affect our editorial decisions, and our mission remains to bring readers the best deals.

Our articles are also not influenced by retailers. Occasionally, a particular article may be sponsored by a brand. In that case, it will be clearly identified as “sponsored content.” We will always be upfront about this.

How we pick our deals

Not every sale is a worthwhile one. Some offers are rarer or more valuable than others. You can rely on CBS Essentials to tell you not only when a new deal drops, but also how epic that sale really is. Some items may be out of stock by the time links are clicked. Some deals may be over by the time you read an article. These things are subject to the retailer, and we work hard to keep current on deal and stock information.

Keeping up with CBS Essentials

There are many ways to stay in touch with our team and coverage:

Remote Work Could Help Fix 4 of US Crises: Stanford Economist https://cbomo.com/remote-work-could-help-fix-4-of-us-crises-stanford-economist/ https://cbomo.com/remote-work-could-help-fix-4-of-us-crises-stanford-economist/#respond Wed, 15 Mar 2023 17:39:00 +0000 https://cbomo.com/remote-work-could-help-fix-4-of-us-crises-stanford-economist/ [ad_1]

  • Experts have spent the last few years examining how remote work could impact US society.
  • Their research spans areas like the birth rate, housing, mental health, and climate change.
  • Leading remote work expert Nick Bloom says it could be part of the solution to four of America’s biggest problems.

Remote work probably isn’t going away anytime soon. The real question is whether it’s part of the solution to some of America’s biggest problems.

Ever since the pandemic forced many Americans to work from home, experts began studying whether remote work has a positive, negative, or negligible impact on US society. Their research has spanned not just the workplace, but into areas like housing affordability, mental health, climate emissions, and even the country’s birth rate.

While some companies are calling workers back to the office, office occupancy has begun to flatline, suggesting the trend will persist — and researchers will get the chance to monitor remote work’s effects over the decades to come.

The share of work being conducted from home rose from 5% in 2019 to over 60% in 2020, Stanford economist and leading remote work expert Nick Bloom told Insider. It’s since fallen to roughly 27%, but Bloom expects it to stabilize around 25%.

Insider spoke with Bloom, whose research on working from home spans nearly 20 years, about whether remote work could have a role to play in solving the US’s falling birth rate, housing crisis, climate emergency, and worsening youth mental health.

The US is running low on people

In 2020, the US fertility rate fell to 55.8 births per 1,000 women, the lowest rate on record and roughly half of what it was in the 1960’s. In the decades ahead, this could not only stunt US economic growth, but make it difficult for the federal government to generate sufficient tax revenue to fund programs like Social Security.

While this may be more of a medium to long-term problem, the US is arguably already short on people. The US had over 10 million job openings as of February, well above historical norms, and immigration hasn’t filled in the gaps in recent years.

Remote work might be part of the solution. It could make it easier for companies to recruit workers in other states — or even countries — to fill openings when they can’t find workers nearby. Plus, the flexibility to work from home could bring more people back into the workforce, like parents who quit their office jobs due to childcare needs and people with disabilities.

In 2021, remote work may already have been among the reasons the US fertility rate ticked up to 56.6 births per 1,000 women, according to a new Economic Innovation Group paper. Analyzing survey data of 3,000 US women, the researchers found that women who worked fully or partially remotely were both more likely to have children than full-time office workers.

If Americans are able to save time on their commutes and dedicate more time to their families, it’s possible this could make raising children seem a bit less daunting for some couples.

Bloom’s research found that on average, US remote workers save 55 minutes per day working from home compared to those who commuted to work. He says he’s currently collecting data on the fertility subject, but believes the EIG study is on to something.

“Our pretty strong view is work-from-home, by easing childcare, will increase fertility rates,” he said. “As economists, we know when childcare is hard and expensive people tend to have fewer kids, with dozens of studies showing this.”

Cutting back on long commutes could also make it easier for people to live in suburban areas, where there’s a larger supply of homes big enough to accommodate families.

America has a housing crisis

The US is short on housing, and it’s among the key reasons homes and rents are so expensive for so many people. But remote workers often have more flexibility to choose where they live, which means they can opt for more affordable areas

“People are able to consider affordability more, while putting less weight on, ‘I need to be near the office,'” Adam Ozimek, the chief economist at the Economic Innovation Group, previously told Insider

While the influx of city dwellers moving to “Zoomtowns” has pushed up home prices in those areas, they’ve helped ease prices in the cities workers left. And given many areas outside cities have stronger records of building — and building less expensively — they may be able to support the newcomers and keep home prices from surging

“These are cheaper areas to build,” Bloom said. “So longer-run opening up construction on land further out around cities will lower the cost of housing. So this is clearly a big win.”

Additionally, some of the newly vacant office buildings could eventually be converted into apartments — which could help increase housing supply and push down prices. For a variety of reasons, however, this could be a slow-moving process

One way remote work might make people’s housing costs a bit more expensive: Some people may decide they need more space for their at-home offices, or more space in general given they’re spending so much time at home.

Young Americans’ mental health is plummeting

Teenagers, in particular teenage girls, are in the midst of their worst mental health crisis in a decade, according to CDC data. In the years to come, these teenagers will become the next generation of workers.

Studies have come to mixed conclusions about remote work’s impact on mental health. Some have suggested that the flexibility of working from home can help workers avoid annoying commutes, stressful office environments, and even workplace racism. Others, however, have found that it can make it harder to establish a work-life balance and lead to isolation and loneliness, particularly among younger employees. Some researchers have even argued a commute is good for one’s mental health

Bloom thinks a hybrid model is the best approach.

“The evidence I have seen shows that ‘hybrid’ is good for mental health, as you avoid one or two days a week of commuting which is stressful and unpleasant,” he said. “Fully remote — or heavily remote — can generate loneliness.”

There’s a looming climate crisis

The world is trying to avoid the worst consequences of global warming by cutting back on carbon emissions

Whether remote work will help the US move towards its climate goals remains to be seen. Less commuting means less driving of gas-powered vehicles, but it also means more people using heat and air conditioning when they’re working at home. And when hybrid workers move further from their place of work, their occasional commutes become longer — potentially offsetting any emissions improvements.

Bloom says remote work “probably” contributes to lower emissions, but that the research on this is complicated.

This couple configured their Doylestown house to accommodate their sons’ creative passions https://cbomo.com/this-couple-configured-their-doylestown-house-to-accommodate-their-sons-creative-passions/ https://cbomo.com/this-couple-configured-their-doylestown-house-to-accommodate-their-sons-creative-passions/#respond Wed, 15 Mar 2023 12:38:04 +0000 https://cbomo.com/this-couple-configured-their-doylestown-house-to-accommodate-their-sons-creative-passions/ [ad_1]

Pier and Jennifer Giacalone gave up the main bedroom and large attic space in their Doylestown home for what they considered more important endeavors: their teenagers.

Their 16-year-old son, Rolley, needed space for his elaborate music studio. Their 17-year-old son, Ben, who has published two books about Dungeons & Dragons, needed space to write.

“What are you going to do with kids?” Pier said from his living room on a balmy winter morning. “The more room they have, the better it is for us.”

Pier, a music producer, and Jennifer, an author, both work from home. Jennifer, who has published a book of poetry dedicated to Star Trek characters and a 1970s-based detective novel, uses a back room as her office. She is currently working on a screenplay. Her desk overlooks a bucolic back yard.

Pier, who learned to play guitar at age 7 and had gigs in Manhattan in his early 20s, had to temporarily downsize his business, Hopetown Sound, from a 3,000-square-foot commercial recording studio in New Hope to the cozy garage in Doylestown.

“I lost 30%-40% of my business during the pandemic,” he said. “Unfortunately, it has stayed that way.”

The creative family of four had to find the house, a three-story, 2,000-square-foot Colonial near Delaware Valley University, quickly as their home and studio of 14 years in Carversville was sold in 2022 by their landlord. The Doylestown home, owned by a friend in the special-needs community, was enough space for their multitude of creative interests and was the right price.

Hailing from New York, the couple moved to Bucks County in 2008.

“Our oldest was in need of preschool, and it was clear our younger one had needs,” Pier said. “When we landed here, the support was amazing. An [early intervention] team descended on our house.”

And New York City seems undoable for the middle class these days, Pier said.

“We were just priced further and further out,” he said. “She was commuting an hour from the edge of Queens. It’s actually easier to get there from here.”

Their home, painted in gray tones and outfitted with dark wood floors, is filled with more than a dozen guitars and several pieces of art from Pier’s father, who was an art professor at Kean University in North Jersey. Some of the furniture came from his mother’s Lower East Side apartment, which she had since the 1970s.

In the front room, which is flooded with light and anchored by a gray brick fireplace, sit several guitars. One is signed by Zayn, formerly of One Direction fame, and was given to Pier as a Christmas present. Zayn rented Pier’s recording studio in 2017, 2018 and 2021.

“He had an amazing deal with Sony. At the time he came to me, he was taking his time,” he said. “They flew in a lot of celebrity producers from England. A producer from Alicia Keys’ studio in New York also came down.”

Upstairs, Ben, uses his bedroom to play Dungeons & Dragons, write and paint hundreds of game-related figures.

“He has always dabbled in [Dungeons & Dragons] but grew during the pandemic,” his father said. “It was a way for him to be social. They were able to do it online.”

“He had started writing a game but wanted to make a book out of it,” his mother added. “He wanted to control the narrative. He worked for a solid year and didn’t do anything else.”

The books, self-published on Amazon, will probably be a trilogy, his mother said.

“The first one is about heroes; the second one is The Empire Strikes Back of the series as the bad guys are getting ahead,” she said. “He has started the third one.”

Rolley, who has both an encyclopedic memory and intense love of music, has outfitted his own room with several keyboards, one a $2,000 Nord, and an electronic drum set. He taught himself piano playing GarageBand on his iPad at age 8, his father said.

“As a parent of a child with autism, you are always going to worry about what they are going to do as adults. It was always obvious with him it was going to be music,” Pier said. “The silver lining in closing the studio was that instead of putting instruments in storage, I put them in his room and that gave him more access. We made the investment.”

When their children — both students at Central Bucks West — graduate, the couple plans to look for a bigger space, one with a home and an out building for a studio.

“That was our plan all along,” Pier said.

Apple limits hiring, delays bonuses (Representational Image)

New Delhi: As a part of the cost-cutting measure, tech giant Apple has decided to delay bonuses for a section of corporate employees due to uncertain macroeconomic conditions. Bloomberg reported that the frequency of bonuses for some corporate workers will also be reduced, though there appear to be no cuts. If the reports come true, a section of employees may not get promotions next month. On the basis of its performance, the tech firm disburses bonuses and gives promotions twice a year (April and October) to its employees.

APPLE FREEZES HIRING

Apart from delaying bonuses and promotions, Apple is also expected to freeze hiring. Earlier Google, Meta and several other tech companies had overhired employees since 2020 and now they are laying off thousands of employees.

Bloomberg claimed that HR team at Apple is keeping a close eye on employees’ attendance. Some workers are of the view that scrutiny of office attendance is a trailblazer to the company sacking workers. For the unversed, Apple has ended work from home earlier and asked employees to be in the office thrice a week.

HOW DID APPLE AVOID MASS LAYOFFS

Unlike other tech companies which overhired employees, Apple avoided mass layoffs by cautiously hiring in the last two years. The company recruited only 7,000 employees between 2020 and 2021. If reports are to be believed, Apple hired 164,000 employees as of September 2022— a 6.5% increase from the same period in 2021.

During Apple’s shareholder meeting last week, Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook said the company continues to be especially careful with money. “We’re being very prudent and thoughtful on spending and we continue to be very deliberate when it comes to hiring,” he told shareholders.

On Equal Pay Day, the six cities join over 100 existing California Equal Pay Pledge signatories

SACRAMENTO – First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom today announced that Oakland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Long Beach, and Fresno have signed the California Equal Pay Pledge, joining over 100 existing pledge signatories. The First Partner made the announcement alongside former State Senator Hannah-Beth Jackson; Deputy Mayor of Oakland Kimberly Mayfield, Kimberly Ellis, Executive Director of the San Francisco Department on the Status of Women; Gloria Chen, Chief People Officer for Adobe; and Holly Martinez, Executive Director of the California Commission on the Status of Women and Girls (CCSWG).

“It will continue to take public and private partnerships like our California Equal Pay Pledge to close the gender pay gap in California. Pay inequity stems from a patriarchal system that was not built with gender equity in mind, but instead built to keep money and power in the hands of  few men in control,” said First Partner Siebel Newsom. “Given our history as a nation, closing the pay gap for mothers and women of color may seem like a daunting goal, but in California, we are up to the challenge. I am grateful to the over 100 companies as well as the cities of Oakland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Fresno, Long Beach, and San Diego for standing with us and sending a clear message to their employees, customers, and constituents that women are valued and that women’s labor is as valuable as men’s.”

First Partner Siebel Newsom Announces Cities of Oakland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Long Beach, and Fresno Become First Cities to Sign Equal Pay Pledge

“Women in America are more likely to live in poverty than men, more likely to work in fields that pay lower wages, and even when holding the same jobs, they are more likely to make less than their male counterparts,” said Mayor Sheng Thao. “This persistent wage gap holds women back and hurts families. I am proud that Oakland is the first city in California to sign the Equal Pay Pledge. We owe it to our City workers – and all women – to send a clear message that everyone deserves equal pay.”

“Lifting as we climb is one of the most important things we can do as leaders, which is why being an active participant in the fight for pay equity is so important,” said Mayor Karen Bass. “I’m proud to sign this pledge and I thank First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom for leading this crucial initiative.”

“Equality is a fundamental American value and the bedrock of our democracy, which is why California and the City of San Diego are dedicated to leading the nation on promoting women’s equality,” said Mayor Todd Gloria. “From reestablishing the City’s Commission on the Status of Women to conducting our City’s first ever Pay Equity Study, San Diego is among those on the vanguard for women’s rights, and I’m proud to join many other local governments and business leaders in committing to the California Equal Pay Pledge.”

First Partner Siebel Newsom Announces Cities of Oakland, San Francisco, Los Angeles, San Diego, Long Beach, and Fresno Become First Cities to Sign Equal Pay Pledge

“From the moment I was elected Mayor of Fresno, choosing a team that reflected diversity and gender equity was a priority,” said Fresno Mayor Jerry Dyer. “I’m proud to say that women make up 60 percent of my administration, including our City Manager, my Chief of Staff, two Assistant City Managers, my Communications Director and more. Citywide, we continue making great strides in evaluating and making equitable improvements- and that leads to better service for the people of Fresno.”

“We are proud to stand with First Partner Siebel Newsom and take the California Equal Pay Pledge,” said Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson. “By ensuring that women in government and across every sector are paid fairly for doing the same work, we can eliminate the gender pay gap and meaningfully expand economic opportunity for working women and their families throughout California.”

“At Adobe, we’re proud to have achieved global gender pay parity for the fifth year in a row and to continue this vital work alongside our Equal Pay Pledge Partners to advance pay parity across the state of California and beyond,” said Gloria Chen, Adobe’s Chief People Officer. “Fair pay is one of the most tangible ways to show our employees that we value them, and it also serves as an important contributor to create a thriving and inclusive workplace where we can fully tap into the diversity of the communities where we live and work.”

“Closing the gender wage gap is not just something California can do, it’s something we must do,” said Kimberly Ellis, Director of the San Francisco Department on the Status of Women. “From building credit to building wealth, we know that the wage gap has greatly hindered progress toward actualizing women’s equality. The City and County of San Francisco is proud to support the First Partner’s initiative and look forward to doing our part to making pay equity a reality for all women in the Golden State.”

“Despite the incredible progress women have made, the gender pay gap in the United States has held stable for nearly 20 years,” said California Commission on the Status of Women and Girls Executive Director Holly Martinez. “This is an unacceptable stagnation reflecting, in part, that women continue to be clustered in lower-paying occupations relative to their share of the workforce but also persistent discrimination not explained by any other measurable factor. The reliance on women during the pandemic as essential workers, caregivers, and parents made clear that women are essential to our economy and key workforce participants. It’s time to finally close the wage gap.”

In 2019, as part of her California for ALL Women initiative, the First Partner, in partnership with CCSWG launched the Equal Pay Pledge to build upon the state’s nation-leading equal pay laws by closing the existing gender wage gap. The California Partners Project, founded by the First Partner in 2020, also provides support for the Pledge.

Companies who sign the Equal Pay Pledge have committed to conducting annual company-wide gender pay analyses, reviewing their hiring and promotion processes and procedures to reduce unconscious bias and structural barriers, and promoting best practices to help close the pay gap and ensure fundamental equity for all workers.

To date, 111 companies have signed the California Equal Pay Pledge, including the State of California, Adobe, GoFundMe, and Apple. Since the launch of the Pledge, First Partner Siebel Newsom has helped connect thousands of Californians to educational equal pay resources, hosted roundtables and conversations to hear firsthand about the pay gap’s impact on working women and their families, and secured major corporate commitments to the Equal Pay Pledge – reaching hundreds of thousands of employees. More information on signatories and the Equal Pay Pledge is available here.

California has some of the strongest equal pay laws in the country, but women in the state still earn 88 cents for every dollar a man earns. Nationally, women earn on average 77 cents for every dollar a man earns, and those numbers  plummet to 64 cents for Black women, 54 cents for Latina women, and 51 cents for Native American women, and 62 cents for mothers. In addition, the gender wage gap creates staggering financial losses with California women losing a combined total of $87 billion each year.

First Partner Siebel Newsom is committed to lifting up women and mothers and their ability to thrive both at work and at home. In addition to the Equal Pay Pledge, she’s been an outspoken advocate for reproductive freedom, championed California’s work to increase equitable representation at the tables of power by diversifying public company boards in the state, and advocated for family-friendly policies such as paid leave and child care.
